I stay in Calabar. You could as well call me a Calabar girl or “Cali ” girl, lol, but I’m not from Calabar neither am I from Cross River state. Was just born and brought up there.
When the word ‘Calabar’ is mentioned, what comes to the mind is often thoughts of peace, serenity, tourism, beauty and carnivals. For all these and more are what makes Calabar a tourists’ delight. Beautifully sitted on a hilltop and often referred to as Canaan City, the coastal city of Calabar is a pleasant metropolis with clean streets and a mildly cool weather with an inland appeal. Little wonder, locals and visitors say the word Calabar is an anagram for “Come And Live And Be At Rest”.
THE MARINA RESORT
Yass! All we Calabar peeps are really familiar with “marina”. Located by the Calabar river bank and commissioned on 26th may,2007, this really nice place has a serene environment that just gets you feeling all comfy and light and free. On arrival at the gate, there are hardworking security personnels that searches all vehicles coming in to this pleasurable place. Different people come there for different purposes. My first visit there was just to look around. I love the huge anchor as you drive down in, it scared me at first because of its size but I got used to it.
Not an island in the real sense tho , it’s a lovely three-plantation style sit-out spot with a nice view that overlooks the river. You could just come chill at anytime of the day, get chilled drinks (cocktails) at the well-stocked bar and enjoy mouth watering edibles like chicken/fish pepper soup with any “point and kill” fish of your choice, grills, seafood and even native cross river delicacies on the menu.
THE SLAVE TRADE MUSEUM
When I got there, I was told to chill so other people could also join in. Apparently, it was gonna be a tour with a tour guide. The whole slave story was told in a whole different form that it almost felt like I was experiencing it. It was so touching that it got me feeling sad and sorry for our African brethren that went through such a trying time in our history. We weren’t allowed to take pictures but everything I saw left more than pictorial imprint in my mind. As I came out feeling disheartened , I saw the next building. Film house!
This like the most visited place in marina resort. Lots of people come to relax and see a movie during their leisure. New movies are always available for viewing once they are out at a very affordable price which encourages frequent visits from cinema-loving individuals. The refreshments available (popcorn, sharwama, hotdogs, cookies, chocolate bars, drinks, etc) are just perfect. The staff are really welcoming. The atmosphere, the sound quality, the screens, all just perfect! I have friends who even go to see movies like everyday; lol.
After film house is a Lawn. Nicely mowed, clean and green. During weekends and holidays, families and friends have picnics there. It’s a nice picture spot.
It’s a hall just for games. Different games like chess, Scrabble, monopoly, play station, table soccer, snooker, and many more. I played chess on my first visit. Was still learning tho.
A carousel, swing and other play equipments are in the lawn after the game house. It’s like the kids part but the swing could be used by adults too and I always use it anytime I visit. It’s like a main requirement of the child in me.
Then there’s a fast food where nice delicacies are prepared, several halls for occasions and meetings, vast parking lot.
There’s also the resort’s bar and lounge with sea-view where you could enjoy drinks, watch sports or generally just relax.
There are also African fashion shops. Native Fashion items and wears are sold there. I always make sure I visit and buy anything interesting that I can afford on each visit even as little as a bracelet or an earing.
THE BOAT RIDE:
I wouldn’t dare leave out the boat ride. Oh… my first ever boat ride was my first ever journey on water. I just kept screaming cos I’ve never liked the thought of being on such a vast body of water. It scares me really, though i might never get used to boat rides, but it’s surely something I’d love to keep experiencing.
My marina resort tour was just perfect for the holiday. I go there anytime I’m back in Calabar for movies, boat rides or for even the awesome view (to think, write, clear my head take pictures, eat, etc). It’s just a perfect place to be. Its_all_my_view!
